Update

We are doing great over here.  The first five days I was feeling very sore and just like I was waiting to recover but then all at once I started feeling pretty great.  I am still taking it easy - have to save my energy for when Kevin goes back to work next week.  But I have been on a walk and been out gardening already.

Bridget is a pretty perfect baby so far.  She is a champion nurser and gained 5 oz in her first week. And already I can get her latched on in the night without getting up or even turning the light on so I am even well rested.

Henry still loves Baby Bridget.  Likes to give her "nosies".  And tells us when she's crying that she wants Mommy milk.  So far no jealousy.  And he loves that we have been having lots of visitors and the visitors have even brought him presents so he sure is happy.

Of course it is more work having a toddler and a newborn but it is also the best of two worlds.  Henry is talking and talking and frequently making us laugh or just marvel at his cuteness.  And Bridget is a 24/7 hug.  Life is pretty great right now.

Baby #2

We will become a family of four in May with baby #2 due on the 11th. We had the ultrasound on Monday and yes there is a baby in there. I went through first trimester sickness, have a baby belly, have little aches and pains, and am always tired. But it still seems unbelievable that there is a baby in there. Even after we saw its little legs and face and spine.
Of course we have all those same regular worries about baby #2 as every family. Suddenly we notice how much attention Henry demands. We have already begun messing with our lovely sleep strategy of Henry and me falling asleep together after nursing at night. As much as any sleep book might tell us that this is a mistake and as much as we might have our work cut out for us over the next 4 1/2 months to get Henry just a little more independent and ready for the new baby, it has been a lovely and very easy almost two years. Nothing feels better than doing what feels right to you as a mother especially when it works. And we are making some slow progress in our quest to change things up a bit. Last night Kevin put Henry to sleep completely on his own just by telling him stories in bed for 20 minutes. Next we just have to hope this was not a fluke and then turn our attention to those night wakings.
And just this weekend I finished my first knitting project for the baby. I used a variation of the 5 hour baby sweater. A little yellow cotton cardigan.
We tell Henry all the time about the baby in Mommy's tummy and he will kiss my belly but he doesn't get it. He's too busy baking with Thomas anyway.

Cloth Diapers

I know when I was trying to get our cloth diaper stash ready before Henry was born I read and read and read all over the internet to try and figure out what was the best way to do it. So now I thought I'd write just a little about what I've learned.

We took a little hiatus from cloth diapers at the end of the winter but I'm glad to say we are back to using cloth almost all the time now. We use disposables when we are out visiting and we use one overnight diposable each night to keep Henry's bum nice and dry while he sleeps. But other than that we are back to cloth.

In the past week I made 10 new cloth diapers in an effort to get Kevin and I jazzed about cloth diapering again. I made these a little different than most of the ones I had made previously because now I know better what I like.

I still used the free Rita's Rump Pocket pattern but this time I sewed the absorbant stuff in instead of leaving it open for stuffing. Leaving it open did really make it size adjustable - they really did fit him when he was just a few weeks old and still fit him now. But having to stuff them before you use them is annoying and taking the stuffing out when the diaper is soiled is annoying and gross. Also, even with the stuffing out, the diapers take quite a while to dry in the dryer because of the elasticated leg openings so I would hang them to dry anyway.

I also picked light coloured fabrics for making the diapers. I've learned they make it easier to peek and see if the diaper is dirty while Henry is wearing it.

Here is Henry in the wool diaper cover shorts that I knit him last May. I use wool covers occasionally but much prefer the storebought plastic covers. And we've been happy with the cheap Kushies brand covers.

So we are using mostly the stuffed pocket diapers with pins and plastic covers. We have some cheap all in ones that I use because they're easy but he almost always ends up getting damp pants when wearing those. And now that he's having big boy poos I like our diaper sprayer attached to the toilet for getting rid of that poop before putting to be washed. But even with the sprayer that bit is pretty gross.

In other news Henry is eating quite well these days after going through a couple months during which he refused almost all food and only wanted to nurse. He will usually eat some of what we are eating. Some of his new favourite foods are plain chickpeas, pasta, and strawberries. I think his favourite is still banana though and he says " 'nana" whenever he sees one.

For a new baby

Kevin has some friends expecting in May. So I was excited to sew something for the new baby. They know they are having a girl but I am still learning the ropes of serging and sewing with knits so I didn't make a dress. I made a little sweat suit from an old Ottobre magazine, the same one I made for Henry in the fall.

I used some knit fabric I got from our thrift store that has little mermaids on it and some pink trim. I love the mermaid fabric for the cuteness but after sewing it up it became very obvious that it's not very good quality. Very thin and not super soft. I should have paid more attention beforehand instead of being too in love with the mermaids. Lesson learned.

And to finish off the post here are some recent pictures of Henry, this is as good as photos get at the moment as I just cannot get him to look at the camera.

1st Birthday Celebration #1

Henry turns one in just a few days. We had a lovely family day long weekend and enjoyed celebrating Henry's first birthday at my mum's.

He got to have some chocolate cake that his Aunt Eliza made for him.

The adults had homemade vegetarian sushi. Henry wouldn't even try it.

Henry got to open some presents.

And play with his presents.

And Henry got to enjoy the company of some of his extended family.
