A shirt

More sewing for Henry this week. This is Kai's shirt from Weekend Sewing (my favourite sewing book). I followed the pattern exactly except I was making it from an old shirt so I got to reuse the buttons and buttonholes and placket. I did the 1 year size but I think it turned out a little big. Makes him look like a big fat guy.

I also sewed up some shorts from a thrift store pattern. These turned out much too big though so they will be put away till next summer.

Heather Ross' Summer blouse variation 2

The summer blouse pattern took a bit of tweaking to get it to fit me just right but now I've done that there's so many possibilities for simple woven tops - I can't stop. This one I made from a men's large shirt that had this awesome boat and dolphin pattern on it. I cut the front in two so that the top bit has buttons and the bottom doesn't (reusing the button part from the original shirt).

And to test whether I can wear it all year - it looks cool with a cardi. These pictures remind me why short hair is not for me - it needs cutting again already!

And Henry's new thing is his shape sorting toy. He's getting it. Right now it is mostly trial and error but he gets it in a lot of the time. And he LOVES when you clap for him after he gets it in.

Heather Ross' Summer blouse variation

I am in love with this Weekend Sewing book and especially this pattern. It's great being able to sew simple summer tops for myself because I know I will end up wearing them a lot. And now because it's so easy to make infinite variations.

On this one I did a rounded neck with now slit. And I cut the front in half near the top and did a bit of gathering. And I did a patch pocket. And I am very happy with the result.

I did use some thrift store fabric from my stash and I had to really scrounge and artfully arrange pattern pieces to get enough fabric.

This is still far off from serious pattern drafting but just making my own little variations to a pattern makes me feel a bit all powerful like now I can create anything. It's got me real jazzed about sewing for sure. And I am finally sewing clothes for myself that I actually like. I'm done with making clothes that ungrateful baby for awhile. Of course, sewing nice things for myself does have me thinking it might be time to buy a serger. But it's a bit overwhelming and for now I am holding out for a good deal on a used one.

Heather Ross' Summer blouse #2

I made a second summer blouse from Heather Ross' Weekend Sewing. And I think I got it just right this time, a definite improvement from blouse #1. (There was also a blouse #1.5 that has since made its way into the scrap bucket due to a combination of deciding that I actually didn't like the fabric I was using and trying to make my own bias tape not on the bias, very silly I know but I only had a small bit of material that I wanted to use.) I used actual fabric from the fabric store for this one (was so nice to use real, brand new fabric for a change). I took it in quite a bit and I think I found just the right balance between being flattering and comfy - it's a delicate balance with woven material. Now that I've perfected the pattern for me I have a million more ideas of little variations I want to make.

And I did a 3/4 length sleeve which I really like. It's funny because what first attracted me to the blouse was that I always think wearing long sleeves is really quite a hip thing to do in the summer. But 3/4 length is still quite long and feels less bulky under a cardigan.

Summer Outfit

I sewed up this summer outfit from Heather Ross` Weekend Sewing last week. I am pretty happy with it, probably shouldn't wear the pieces together though - there are limits to my frumpiness.

Apart is better. This is the summer blouse. It feels and looks a bit like I am wearing a sheet I think. Could be to do with the fact that it is made from an old sheet. But it was easy to make and I am happy to consider it a practice version - I have plans to make a couple more before summer.

The skirt I love. I made it from a table cloth. But it was quite a bit more work than my table cloth circle skirt. Still I got to reuse the finished edge on the bottom and save myself from hemming. And it`s a really nice drapey linen type material. Think it will feel really nice to wear in the summer. And I stuck to my resolution and added a pocket to the skirt, just in one of the seams. I took the advice from Heather Ross` website and added one extra panel (that was all I had enough material for) and I think it is enough.

Henry's Weekend and More Steps

The three of us headed out for some visiting in and around Toronto this weekend. We all had a great time: some restaurant meals, some nice walks, and Henry really progressed in his walking. He seems to be stimulated to do new things when he is in new environments. At his Auntie's and then at his Nana's, he was in love with standing on his own. Would do it again and again with a big smile on his face. And then by the end of the weekend he was taking 5 or 6 steps at a time too! He is sleeping now, can't wait to see if he continues this morning. We also took lots of pictures this weekend, here are some of our highlights.

At an ethiopian restaurant, Henry chose to eat nothing but rice cakes. And he did very well just being strapped to a regular chair until he decided he just had to stand up and we had to move him to the stroller with the more serious straps.

More rice cakes (he does eat other things but rice cakes seem to work wonders for shutting him up when we're out). This time he shares with the puppy.
Standing on his own!
Standing on his own while we read a story and he straddles the puppy. What a picture!
Enjoying one of our walks, it was quite warm this weekend. Nothing like a cold snowy winter to make you appreciate 2 degrees celcius.
And now I have to get unpacked and back on track. This weekend I got try out my new everything tote that I sewed from Heather Ross' Weekend Sewing. It's the second one I've made, the first was a gift. It turned out to be just perfect for throwing in clothes for one day including my bulky fleece PJs and throwing into the car.
